We have tested the softphone feature over VPN and found it works ok as long as your connection has sufficient bandwidth both up and down. The one user who had problems was on a DSL, with only 1MB for upload speed, which we perceived as the likely issue since the same user and laptop computer can use the softphone on site with no problem.
